GREENING YOUR ROUTINE IN AN APARTMENT

World Environment Day is celebrated each year on 5th June and is a global call to action to protect our planet. This is a significant platform for raising awareness about the critical issues facing the Earth. It serves as a stark reminder to the citizens of the world of the pressing need to act towards environmental protection.

While you might think that living in an apartment might seem like a limitation when it comes to environmental efforts, there are plenty of ways to make a positive impact, right from your cozy home.

Here are some ideas to get you started on incorporating eco-friendly practices into your apartment life:

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE

  • Become a Recycling Rockstar. Get familiar with the nearest recycling stations in your area. Start by sorting your waste correctly, papers, plastics, bottles, etc. Wash containers before tossing them in the bin and break down large cardboard and delivery boxes to maximize space.

  • The Power of “No” to Plastic. Say goodbye to single-use plastics! Invest in a reusable water bottle and tote bags for shopping trips. When it comes to food and excessive packaging, opt for loose fruits and vegetables.

  • Give Appliances a Vacation. Unplug electronics and chargers when not in use. They continue to suck up energy even on standby mode. Embrace natural light in your homes whenever possible, and switch to energy-efficient LED bulbs while replacing old ones.

CHANNEL YOUR INNER GARDENER

  • Sprout an Indoor Oasis. Apartment living doesn't have to mean missing out on the joys of gardening. Herb gardens flourish on windowsills, and vertical planters are a great space-saving option for leafy greens. You will have fresh ingredients on hand, and plants purify the air inside your apartment.

  • Become a Plant Parent Pro. Research which houseplants are low-maintenance and air purifying. Spider plants, snake plants, and peace lilies are excellent choices for beginners.

  • Adopt a “Freecycle” Mentality. Before tossing something, consider if it can be reused or repurposed. Old jars can become chic storage containers, and mismatched mugs can find new life as planters. Used yogurt containers and milk bottles are excellent resources for young kids to art and craft on.

CONNECT WITH YOUR COMMUNITY

  • Support Eco-Friendly Businesses. Look for local stores that offer package-free options or use recycled materials in their packaging. Many restaurants are also switching to sustainable practices- support those who are making a difference! Carry your coffee mug when you go out the next time, some cafes give you a discount if you bring in your coffee mug.

EDUCATE YOURSELF & ADVOCATE

  • Dive Deep into Environmental Issues. There is a wealth of information available online and in libraries. Learn about the environmental challenges facing our planet and how your actions can contribute to positive change.

  • Spread the Green Word. Talk to your friends, family, and neighbors about your eco-efforts. Share tips and inspire others to embrace a more sustainable lifestyle. Talk at home to your kids about ways you can take small steps at home.

World Environment Day empowers all of us to become responsible stewards of our environment and work together to build a greener, healthier future for ourselves and generations to come. Remember, every small action counts. By celebrating World Environment Day in your apartment and adopting eco-friendly habits, you are contributing to a greener future for all. So, get creative, have fun, and show the planet some love from the comfort of your cozy corner of the world!
